I’m going to share a story today. This is the tale of “everyone else sells the stuff they don’t want on eBay, I can do it too. It will be EASY”.
And they’re right in theory. It’s technically easy to use eBay, but like every other semi disastrous time I’ve tried to sell something on an online marketplace, eBay has been anything but easy.
The story starts back in August when my minimalism twinge was just beginning. I’d been semi working on getting rid of a lot of my belongings so I would have an easier time keeping my space clean, and also so when it comes time to move I don’t have a terrible time boxing up all my possessions. Now, many of these possessions could be sold for some sweet sweet cash $$$. Knowing this (and having listened to many a minimalism tale of “I sold all my stuff and did the thing” I decided, “YEAH! I too can sell my stuff and do the thing!”
I only got as far as selling one item - A set of manga books that were in pretty good nick. Here’s where I made my first mistake. Having absolutely no ebay selling experience, or energy to research after that days clean out I didn’t set a “starting bid”. This meant my buyer was able to purchase the books for a ludicrously low price.
This “failure” to sell the books demotivated me to post them immediately, which was mistake number two. It took me until September to get the books from my bedroom to my car, then from my car to the post office. I was looking forward to getting this weight off my chest, but then came mistake number 3.
This mistake was partially my fault and partially the buyers fault. They neglected to send me a proper address (they left out their street number). I should have checked this way before going to the post office, but I didn’t. This lead to me buying a box and stamps for the item to be posted, but this further delay caused another dip in motivation.
Currently the package sits unaddressed in my car. I feel really bad, but the whole process has been an energy sucking vampire for months. If you can take any morals from this story they are 1) If you’re busy and anxious and tired, you probably shouldn’t sell stuff on eBay and 2) If you do sell stuff on eBay do your research and post the items immediately! As for me, I think it will be a very long time before I try to sell anything like this again. I’m also going to post the package tomorrow for realsies this time.
Before I leave you to go about your merry way I want to talk a little about my outfit! The skirt is one of my hand made creations. I’m currently working on putting together a tutorial for youtube (because it’s super easy and comfy).
The shirt is one of the few “Merch Shirts” I own. At the beginning of this year I was accepted into a creative residency with MMAD. We were tasked to create a spoken word show, album and book. I ended up doing the photography for the book and writing a few of the backing tracks. (You can listen to the result here https://open.spotify.com/album/4ePRWZBeU4f4fwwAr9QbFC)
