If you follow me on social media (which if you’re reading this post you probably are) you’ll know that fairly recently I had a break up. It’s left me feeling angry, sad and betrayed, but most importantly in need of a break from the human in question.

I would eventually like to be civil with this person again, but first I need time to heal. Do you want to know what makes healing hard? When every 5 minutes the algorithms that control our online social spaces try and shove your ex down your throat, because for a period they were your most searched human on the platform, and the human you messaged the most on the platform.

I just want to have a break WITHOUT the need to block that person from facebook or instagram, but the algorithm won’t leave me alone. I tried really really hard for a number of weeks to just let things go on social media “as normal” but today I caved in, blocked him and in tern made my feed and search history a calmer, safer place to be.

It shouldn’t be this way. I should be able to take a break from someone without blocking them, but the way the algorithms work it’s basically impossible. I don’t know what the solution is, but it’s yet another thing that angers me about how social media works, and ultimately how shitty it makes me feel.

On a positive note, I’m starting to rebuild my creative routines, so there should be a lot more content coming from me soon :)
