I was lucky enough to play at the National Folk Festival over the Easter long weekend with The Button Collective. It was the most amazing musical experience I've ever had. (The previous top musical experience I had was last years NFF)
For those of you who have no idea what The NFF is, it's a 5 day celebration of culture centred around folk music traditions from around the world. To say it's incredible is an understatement.
Last years festival was life changing for me. This years was no different. (I was not expecting it to be life changing two years in a row... I was very very wrong) This year I made many life long friends, and fostered a number of amazing musical connections. The energy from the festival is staying with me as well and fostering some new tunes and possibly projects.
I was lucky enough to pick up two extra sets with musicians I don't normally play with. On Saturday night I joined Afro Moses in his Afro Fusion band alongside some musical friends. It was insanely fun :) The other set I picked up was a black board with one of my favourite songwriters Oliver Downes. His music is so glittery and lovely and full of soul and feeling. Being able to finally add in the flute lines and textures I hear when listening to his music was heavenly <3.
I also had some lovely moments in the session bar. I spent hours with the tune players (trying to) pick up their tunes. There's one session in particular which stood out. It was a small day time session, held in a corner, and the energy from the other musicians carried my fingers to the correct notes. That sort of musical connection is insane to experience :)
Man, the National Folk Festival is like nothing else I've ever experienced. I hope I can attend every year forever <3 I feel like I don't need to say this, but I'm going to anyway, these photos were not taken at the festival :P I currently have a back log (I actually didn't document any of my festival experience in digital form. I really enjoyed staying in the moment)
Last unrelated thing! If you haven't seen it already, I just published my first flute quartet :D Check it out if you want to :) I wrote the tune after returning from the folk festival last year, so I'd call this good timing!
