Double Trouble

Disney Vans and Dr Martens If you don't know me IRL then you probably don't know that my partner Ro is incredibly stylish. I'm always asking him to jump in my photo's, but usually recieve a glare of disdain, followed by a "no thanks". Ro bought some new shoes today, and finally agreed to me photographing his stylishness :D

Disney Micky and Goofy VansDisney Donald and Pluto Vans

These are the shoes he bought. They're high top Disney Vans featuring Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck and Goofy, and happen to go perfectly with a jumper he picked up from H & M in Melbourne earlier in the year (Which according to Ro "is the only good thing H & M have ever sold")

He also wanted to show off the bag I made for his birthday. It's got a bath time kitty print, and is fully padded and sized to fit his laptop and mixer for when he plays gigs.

I also may have taken advantage of this rare opportunity to grab a photo of us being wayyy too cute. (seriously, we're so sweet I want to vomit :P )

Looking Away Otome Kei Hello Kitty Cardigan

This is what I wore today. I picked this dress up from an opshop in Newtown on Monday. I was down to teach some flute, and had a bit of time to kill. I totally didn't mean to end up op shopping, it just kind of happened...

Otome Kei Head Shot Colour Pop Limbo

I paired it with a hello kitty cardigan, because it's a lighter version of the same pink (and also, Australia forgot that summer is supposed to be hot today.) I also decided to wear my holy grail chocolate brown matte lipstick. (It's by colour pop and is called limbo if you're wondering)

Dr martens polkadot clogs

One thing I didn't get a photo of is the back of my tights. They have a cute seam/bow detail on them (but look like plain black tights from the front.) I actually don't own a pair of "normal" tights at the moment. (Life is too short for normal tights)

I have some exciting music related news! I bought a bass flute :D

head

"What is a Bass Flute?" I hear you ask. To begin with, it looks like this:  12341410_10154389455134606_5918383108227072722_n

It plays a 3 octave range from the C below middle C, to the C two ledger lines above the treble stave (making it sit exactly an octave below the regular C flute we all know and love) The Bass flute I purchased is made by Trevor James, and it's so freaking  pretty.

Hands in front

I just wish I could play it properly. It's flute shaped, and the embouchure looks similar, and your fingering remains the same, but it's a whole new kettle of fish. I've only just worked out how to hold it properly :s

More details

Air support is very different as well, as it the use of the embouchure. It's really odd being terrible at playing a flute. But it's really fun learning a related instrument.

to the side

This is what I wore yesterday when I had some jammy fun times with a friend of mine. It was really hot, so I opted for airy, light clothes which helped to keep me relatively cool.

Hand on hip

I made these skorts over a year ago, and I've not worn them at all this year. I actually forgot how awesome they are to wear. I've got to make some changes to the pattern before I can sew a new set (Totally going to make them in full leg length as well!).

They're basically two half circles with extra bits... Gah, I'll just have to stop being lazy and make a tutorial...

shoes Guess who's finally at the stage in their assignments where they can stop panicking because the bulk of the work is finished 3 ish days before it's due. ME THAT'S WHO!  These assignments have been hanging over my head like huge dark clouds filled with cold, anger and sadness for the last month and a bit, but now that feeling has gone away. Even though they're not done yet, I feel so free!

Walking towards camera landscape

Apart from wining at assignment time management, I played gig 5/5 for this week. This gig was at the Maitland Bowling Club for a fundraiser some people were hosting. It was an interesting gig. We played 3 short (for us) sets of music. For two sets we were kind of sort of background music. In our last set, the host managed to get everyone on the dance floor which was super fun.

Holding skirt edged up

Believe it or not, this outfit is a "I've woken up late, and I have no time to get ready" outfit. We had to be at the venue at 11, which meant I had to wake up at 15 to 9 so I could get ready and leave at a leisurely pace. Instead I woke up late, and rushed to get ready. I pretty much always wear red, black and white when I'm running late because those are the 3 most prevalent colours/tones in my wardrobe.

I'm also wearing my concert makeup because I couldn't be bothered removing my makeup after the gig.

spinny skirt detail

As you can see in the photo above, I'm actually wearing a petticoat under this skirt to give it more poof. This skirt looks pretty terrible without a petticoat. It hangs a bit limp and doesn't have much shape. I made the petticoat out of the black version of the tulle I used for the skirt so that they kind of matched with a slight contrast.

Sideways walking tree

I don't really have much else to say right now. I'm pretty spent, and that feeling isn't going to leave for a few weeks (It'll take me a few weeks to recover from my fortnight of crazy) so apologies in advanced if my writing dies (not that it's very good to begin with :P)

Disney Florals

IMG_0726 I rediscovered a pair of my favourite shoes this week. You may be wondering how I misplaced them seeing as they're super cute, quite large, and have a bright dusty rose pattern on them. About 6 months ago my Dad decided to "Organise" my shoes, which involved putting a bunch in boxes against my will (there was a period when I was removing the boxes/he was putting them back every other day). Anyway, eventually this silent argument wore me down, and I gave up, hence why I haven't worn these shoes in forever.

This is the outfit I wore to Uni on Wednesday. I had one prerogative when I put this outfit together, and that was to stay warm, which I managed to do. I'm really not enjoying the icy temperatures  that Australia is experiencing at the moment. It's really cold, and getting colder, and I'm just not dealing all that well with it.

One last thing! If you're in the Newcastle Area tomorrow evening, my band Vanishing Shapes has a gig! (This is the first gig we've played all month) We're playing at Church of Groove with Bud Petal, who are a pretty sweet folk band. If this sounds like something that would take your fancy, you can find out more deets on the facebook event page.

Cute as a mouse

wpid-pict_20150512_161649.jpg I would like to have a real talk about beauty ideals and body hair. (This is spurred on by a post Buddle and Squeak made on her instagram like a week and a half ago) The TLDR of the situation is this: Everyone has body hair, and no one should make you feel ashamed of how you wear it/try and shame you into wearing it differently.

wpid-pict_20150512_160549.jpg

I was taught by the media and my peers to be ashamed of my body hair at age 12 (which is when I started shaving). The message (which I received loud and clear) was that women don't have body hair, and if you do, you should shave it off because if it's not on your head it's dirty, disgusting and gross. ( I've not actually talked to anyone about this before, but up until recently I was incredibly self conscious about my body hair, particularly on my stomach which has a teeny tiny snail trail of almost invisible hair).

wpid-pict_20150512_160452.jpg

I can remember sitting in sport in year 8 and eavesdropping on a conversation the popular kids were having. They were discussing the girls who were gross because they didn't shave their legs, or they had stubble, or their arm hair was dark. I can remember trying to hide my arms because the hair on my arms was visible and I didn't want to be perceived as gross.  I also used to shave my legs every night to avoid having any sort of leg hair, and let it be known, I didn't shave because I wanted to, I shaved because I thought I had to.

I also remember some close friends of mine being teased because they were late to the shaving party. (I never noticed that they didn't shave until this happened 1) Because they were my friends, and 2) of all the things I cared about, other peoples body hair was incredibly low on my list)

I think the saddest part of this whole situation is that I didn't realise that I had a choice over 1) whether I shaved or not and 2) whether I let my body hair bother me.

wpid-pict_20150512_160953.jpg

(Sorry if this is a bit TMI) My outlook on shaving is very different nowadays. I still shave my pits every night, but that's only because I find it more comfortable. I shave my legs once every 3 or 4 months (only because it feels uncomfy under my tights when I leave it that long). I don't feel ashamed when I wear a bikini and I haven't shaved my legs any more. It's liberating not caring about something so trivial.

I'm not particularly sure if there's a moral to this post. I just think that it's silly people spend so much time and energy thinking about/persecuting others for something as silly as a few hairs in places that aren't the top of a head. The only way people will stop caring is if society somehow normalises body hair, and that's only possible if people talk about it (hence why I'm talking about it)

In other news, my band got into Wollombi Music Festival! This is pretty exciting news (especially seeing as this is our first official festival ever) Anyway, if you're interested in a full day of folky fun you can check out the deets here.
